Quinte West Plays: Arena and turf feasibility study
About this project
As Quinte West grows, it’s important that the City’s facilities continue to meet the needs of our community.
The municipality is undertaking an arena and turf feasibility study to better understand current and future recreation needs and to explore options for arena and turf facilities.
This study will:
Review the condition and use of existing arena facilities and sports fields
Assess current and future demand for ice sports, indoor turf activities and other recreational activities
Explore and recommend facility options
The recommendations from this study will be brought to Quinte West Council in early 2027 as part of the 2027 budget process.
Quinte West’s arenas and sports fields at a glance
Quinte West currently has:
19 outdoor soccer fields
Two municipally owned and operated arenas (three ice pads)
The City’s ice pads range in age from approximately 40 to 70 years old
Why are we doing this?
Planning for the future of parks and recreation facilities is part of the Quinte West’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan (2024-2039), approved by Council in 2025. The plan provides 124 recommendations aimed at creating a healthy and active community for all, including an arena and turf feasibility study.
What we heard: Parks and Recreation Master Plan
As part of the community engagement process for the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, we heard the following from community members and sports user groups:
Top requests from survey respondents included meeting rooms, washrooms and changerooms, program space and indoor sports courts as part of a revitalized or new indoor sports complex
User groups reported the need for additional access to arena ice, meeting space, arena floor, storage, indoor training space and a turf field or an indoor covered space for winter use
User groups reported concerns about limited sports field availability
Survey respondents showed interest in an artificial turf field or an indoor fieldhouse
This study will gather more feedback on how local residents and sports clubs use the City’s current facilities, and recommend options that will support the community into the future.
