Consultation has concluded
Complaints to the Mayor’s office and the City’s bylaw department have indicated that Henry Street often has vehicles parked on both sides, restricting traffic to one lane. Multiple observations from the City’s bylaw department confirmed that this is accurate. Quinte West City Council and the Safe Communities Committee directed staff to explore alternative parking options and create an opportunity for public input around changes to year-round parking on Henry Street. We are gathering feedback on three possible options. Please read the FAQs section below for more information.
Parking prohibited on the Northside of the street. This option would eliminate all on-street parking on the Northside of Henry Street west of Dufferin Avenue at all times of the day and year. It would allow vehicles to drive with minimal obstructions and enable residents to have guests park on the street. There would be signage indicating the restrictions, and violations will be subject to parking enforcement.
Alternating parking prohibitions on the North and South sides There would be alternating parking restrictions on the North and South sides of Henry Street west of Dufferin Avenue for this option. On-street parking would be allowed on the Southside of the street for half the month and the Northside for the other half. There would be signage indicating the restrictions, and violations will be subject to parking enforcement.
No change to parking restrictions This option would maintain the status quo and allow on-street parking on both sides of Henry Street west of Dufferin Avenue.

Several variables factor into the possibility of parking changes on this street. Henry Street is a particularly busy residential street due to its proximity to Trenton Memorial Hospital. After observing the road over time, City staff have concerns about traffic flow and maintaining enough space to accommodate emergency vehicles that need to get to residences.
We also considered the volume of complaints we received from residents and the poor paving conditions on the street.
Community engagement is the best way to ensure that the City is inclusive and allows stakeholders to share their concerns before we make any decisions about parking in residential areas. By collaborating with residents, City staff and external agencies such as the OPP, we can make more informed choices.

Henry Street is a unique situation. The sheer amount of parking that happens on this street makes this different. Residents have difficulty backing out of their driveways, and we have concerns about access for emergency vehicles.

Our intention is not to punish anyone who uses this street for parking; safety is our primary concern. We need to ensure that residents who live and visit the street can safely navigate while driving and entering, and exiting their properties. We want the needs, opinions, and visions to be heard, inclusive of residents and workers, as this affects their everyday lives.

Yes, our bylaw department will make regular patrols and issue tickets for violations.

We will consider the feedback we get from the general public and specific feedback from residents and property owners on Henry Street. In addition to input from the public we will also consult local emergency services and the City’s engineering department for their recommendations.
