My hero is my husband who has volunteered as a lions member for over 35 years. He has worked with several organizations through the lions club raising and donating back into the community such as food bank, altimers society, charity auctions and he is the auctioneer, vision screening , v.o.n. HOSPITAL, dog guides, chip wagon, at his local church. We need more people that have the heart and soul as Mike Seymour does.

Every evening for the past 7 weeks, Duncan, along with his friends and neighbours have held an hour of celebration in support of the front line workers and TMH. Through the tragedy of the mass shooting in Nova Scotia and the loss of the CAF helicopter, the group has also held vigils in memory of these lost lives. Other evenings were devoted to a collection of food for the Care and Share Food Bank, needs of the patients at TMH and collecting donated masks and other items sewn by community members. Keep up the good Job.

It is with tremendous pleasure that I nominate and endorse a highly suitable individual, Dr. Maria Ostrovskaya of Quinte Animal Hospital for the Quinte West Community Hero Award. In myriad ways, Dr. Ostrovskaya’s dedication and accomplishments echo the stellar community of past awardees; and, make her highly deserving of the honor bestowed by the Quinte West Community Hero Award.

This endorsement therefore, is in recognition of Dr. Ostrovskaya’s tireless efforts and outstanding leadership in dealing with Covid-19 spread within our Community.

This endorsement therefore, is in recognition of Dr. Ostrovskaya’s tireless efforts and outstanding leadership in dealing with Covid-19 spread within our Community.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in Ontario, Dr. Ostrovskaya has made a meaningful contribution to our Community wellbeing through elaborating and implementing policies aimed at reducing the spread of this disease; and, subsequently flattening the Corona-virus Curve. As the leading Doctor, Dr. Ostrovskaya works tirelessly to promote bottom-up engagement from her colleagues in the fight against Convid-19. In eliciting solutions, against this unprecedented event, from her coworkers, Dr. Ostrovskaya boosted the morale at the Hospital, at a time when many were scared.

Dr. Ostrovskaya’s dedication and determination to help humanity in the fight against this unforgiving pandemic does not end at the Hospital. She projects a warm, cheerful attitude to all community members. I am acutely aware of the fact that she goes out of her way to help vulnerable members of our community by distributing free face-masks and hand-sanitizers. Dr. Ostrovskaya loves people; beliefs in her community; and, uplifts the spirits of all.

I believe these qualities represent all that is good in our Community; and consequently, I am euphoric to nominate and endorse Dr. Ostrovskaya’s candidacy because honoring her selfless work is in-keeping with the very intent of the Quinte West Community Hero Award.

I was in Freshco super market today 23 April. I was met with the super clean fragrance of fresh...The store was tidy and gave me the warm fuzzies of a clean house. I would like to acknowledge Clarence and Lorraine as Community heroes In our proud city. They are leading by example in making your shopping experience safe and providing confidence to the shopper. They have gone the extra mile for you, so show them some love and let them know you appreciate their efforts. I know I do.

Bhí mé i sármhargadh Freshco inniu 23 Aibreán. Bhuail mé leis an cumhráin úr glan de úr ... Bhí an siopa slachtmhar agus thug sé fuzzies te teach glan dom. Ba mhaith liom aitheantas a thabhairt do Clarence agus Lorraine mar laochra an Chomhphobail Inár gcathair bhródúil. Tá siad chun tosaigh trí shampla maidir le d’eispéireas siopadóireachta a dhéanamh sábháilte agus muinín a thabhairt don siopadóir. Tá siad imithe an míle breise duit, mar sin taispeáin grá dóibh agus cuir in iúl dóibh go bhfuil meas agat ar a gcuid iarrachtaí. Tá a fhios agam go ndéanfaidh mé.

    Hospital Caps

by Amanda.Mck, about 6 years ago

    Hi,

A community hero should be Kelly Abbott. She works in the hospital but is currently working from home. She has made over 100 caps for staff on Quinte 7, over 100 caps for staff on Quinte 6 and has made approx 40 for staff in the ICU (all at Belleville General Hospital). She has not wanted a dime for her time and efforts, just wanting to help. These caps help staff keep their head and hair covered during their shifts and make us feel safe. I definitely think that she is one to deserve recognition for helping this hospital... Continue reading

Community hero’s are all different and no matter what they do they matter and are appreciated! I’d like to take this time to say thank you and show appreciation to the hero close to my heart! He’s been going above and beyond for to help make sure we are all being taken care of. Just before Easter Weekend we came across an old Easter Bunny Costume. He’s been going above and beyond for to help make sure we are all being taken care of. Just before Easter Weekend we came across an old Easter Bunny Costume. I was ecstatic and relieved, knowing that with the pandemic and physical distancing we would not be able to take our boys to our annual Easter Bunny visit and picture at the mall. Now we could at least do an at home photo shoot! Seeing the joy putting on the costume brought to our boys, my husband immediately said other kids deserve this joy too! He spent Easter weekend, 3 whole long days walking neighborhoods , making personal stops to requested homes of Children so thrilled
and happy to see THE EASTER BUNNY!! He walked, hopped and waived for hours to kids who smiled back at him from their porches, windows or driving by cars. The joy he brought warmed my heart and the hearts of lots of children and adults combined over the Easter Weekend! I’m super proud of him!

Sometimes the people we see and hear every day are community heroes we take for granted or don't consider to be special in their craft. My uncle Sean Kelly is most certainly a community hero - especially in these challenging times. Sean has been doing all he can to bring the community together in humorous and heartwarming ways. Sean goes to work every single day and I doubt has ever thought about the risks to his own personal health or safety because there is nothing that would keep him from doing his job for the residents of Quinte West. Ensuring his community is informed and aware of all newsworthy developments in this crisis is important to him. But more important than that is his desire to stay connected in this time of social distancing. Sean wants to make people learn and laugh as much as he can. He undoubtedly gets this from having grown up in a house with 10 siblings, many of whom are teachers! Sean has become a teacher of life. Sean is always working hard at keeping his family connected at this time by participating - very actively - in a family chat group - always sharing stories, pictures, videos of himself dancing in sweatpants, etc. to make sure we all have a chuckle, even when we are going through our own personal struggles. Sean has also helped start a new family tradition where we all listen to him on CJBQ Sunday mornings together. We all live in different parts of the province and world, but many of us tune in on Sunday mornings and enjoy listening to his special guest interviews and the music he so expertly chooses to play for all. It is heartwarming to hear locals call in and thank him for putting on an excellent radio show that is clearly enjoyed by many in these times of "staying home'. We all need entertainment and it is in short supply these days. Thank you to Sean for carrying this torch and doing his absolute best to bring us all together during COVID.

I believe that Suzanne Andrews from the Quinte West Chamber of Commerce must be recognized. She must be working 24/7 to stay on top of all the government programs and direction for our local businesses as well as trying to get our business stories heard and understood by levels of government that are making decisions.

If you own a business it is a daunting task trying to keep on top of every program the government is launching, the webinars available to keep your business viable and all the execution details for these programs. Suzanne is staying on top of it... Continue reading

Here's the part that is the icing on the cake for me. She stays in constant contact with those businesses that have been conversing with her one on one! Our Chamber represents 100's of local businesses and Suzanne is keeping it all together for us. She does an amazing job during "normal" times. I am so appreciative knowing she is out there fighting for our interests, fighting for our towns interests and keeping it all together.

Google refers to an “unsung hero as person who has achieved great things or committed acts of bravery or self-sacrifice, yet is not celebrated or recognized.” The purest definition of every volunteer firefighter in our community, and my husband, Shane Struthers. Everyday, 365 days a year, volunteer firefighters are on call, waiting for the unfortunate emergency of someone, to stop what they are doing, and head out to help. On top of maintaining a full time job, these community hero’s are always on call - in the middle of family dinner, during a movie night, while out for a walk, 9-1-1 doesn't wait for anyone’s schedule to be clear; and the leave; to help because it is their passion to be committed to the safety and well being of our entire community.

Shane, never asks for acknowledgement, accolades or recognition. Every time the page goes out, without question he puts on the green lights, and heads willingly into danger. The training, regular practice, experience, education and the association of fellow firefighters keep him safe, however as a wife, I think there will always be some worry until he returns home safety.

I would like to nominate Shane Struthers, volunteer firefighter as a Quinte West Community Hero - he could not be more deserving, as could all volunteer firefighters in Quinte West. From the bottom of my heart, I thank each and everyone of them for the dedication and sacrifice they make for our safety.

    ~ Vicky Struthers
